A Hole In My Heart (2004)
« on: April 19, 2013, 09:47:49 AM »

Directed and Written by Lukas Moodysson

Starring Thorsten Flinck, Björn Almroth, Sanna Bråding and Goran Marjanovic

Straight from the outset I feel that I should mention that this is not a pleasant film by any means. Any hope of redemption in this movie is quickly done away with by some of the genuinely unpleasant images and actions portrayed on screen.
The basic plot revolves around a young man named Eric (played by Björn Almroth) who shuts himself in his room while his father (Rickard played by Thorsten Flinck) and a friend (Gecko played by Goran Marjanovic) shoot an amateur porn film in their decrepit apartment, with a young lady by the name of Tess (played by Sanna Bråding).
What follows is a gradual downward spiral into some truly disgusting behavior that also touches on subjects such as, morality, friendship, loneliness, isolation, childhood trauma and a shallow lust for fame and recognition.
Tess once auditioned for the reality show 'Big Brother' but was rejected, she wants nothing more than to be a star and her desperation leads her into the world of amateur porn and cosmetic surgery (the description of which is interlaced with genuine footage of actual procedures), she is told by Rickard that he intends to send the tapes of the movie they are making to a 'contact' in Los Angeles.
What starts off as your basic 'banging her on the couch' style porno quickly descends into something a lot nastier as the two men threaten Tess with acts of violence. Tess becomes upset and Eric interrupts as Rikard and Gecko try to persuade Tess that is was only a bit of fun and part of a role play for the film. Tess makes an exit and we see scenes of her, quite obviously distressed, sitting on the pavement and in a local supermarket as passers by (with their faces blurred) carry on with their normal day to day business, implying that she feels alone, isolated, like she doesn't belong or feel as though she's part of the real world.
Meanwhile, Rikard speaks to Gecko about how he feels that his son doesn't respect him, Gecko makes a suggestion that they could bond over a bit of shooting (BB guns, not porn). Rikard makes a clumsy attempt to bond with Erik by inviting him to join Gecko and himself as they shoot at pornographic images of women that have been stuck to cardboard boxes, paying special attention to make sure that the majority of the shots are aimed at either the breasts or the vagina in a heavy handed attempt at dealing with the subject of the characters misogynistic tendencies.
Later we learn that the two men have been exposed to sexual abuse earlier on in life, there are conversations between the two expressing their will to escape their present situation and forget their troubled pasts. Gecko seems to have an interest in UFO's and wishes to see space someday and expresses a child like curiosity in the subject, the way this is played implies that he was cheated out of a childhood, he never really had a chance to just be a kid.
Eric's character is mostly developed through monolog directed straight to the camera, we learn he has a deformed hand and that he keeps pet earthworms. He may be a self absorbed, angst ridden teen but I feel he is the most sympathetic character here as he is really only a innocent witness to the depravity that happens in his own home.
We have one more horrific scene to get through, but I don't want to tell you what happens as I feel I may have given away too much already but I can assure you that one image in particular stuck with me for quite a while after I had finished watching the film.
As the film comes to an end we learn that Eric does actually seem to genuinely care for his father as he is awoken by the screams coming from Rickard's bedroom. It would appear that Rikard has had a nightmare and wet the bed, we learn that this is a fairly regular occurrence. Eric helps his father to the bath and washes him with the shower, after which he and Tess take the wet bedsheets downstairs to wash them. Here we see another side to the relationship between Tess and Eric, like it has somehow blossomed into a brother/sister relationship, there were moments earlier on in the film where we could see them striking up some kind of friendship, perhaps the more innocent two of the four characters.
So what exactly is this film about? Well to me me it seems to be about the desperation of the emotionally damaged and extent to which they go to feel some sense of belonging. There is a scene towards the end where Rikard implies that in normal circumstances these people wouldn't necessarily be friends but, it's the loneliness and desperation that brings them together. It could also be said that it touches upon the damaging effects of pornography. Swedish porn star Puma Swede has condemned the film for furthering the stereotype that most people in the porn industry are emotionally damaged and to a certain extent I think she has a point, how many films have we seen that show the opposite? I can't think of any myself.
Over all I'd say that if this sounds like something you might want to experience then give it a shot, it's not a nice film as I've said, it's genuinely pretty depressing and the way in which it is shot may not be to everyone's taste (coincidentally, this has an unfairly low rating on IMDB) . It's certainly not something I'd rush to see again anytime soon but it was certainly an experience.

I was a massive fan of Lilja-4-ever, and so hearing this one is by the same director has already gotten me intrigued. Another poster had mentioned this to me quite some time ago, and I remember thinking it sounded interesting, but your review has convinced me that I want to check this movie out.

Thankyou.
