Extreme Horror and rape.
« on: November 29, 2019, 10:02:33 AM »
Hey all. Just an observation but if you have any feedback please chime in. I’ve watched hundreds of horror films with many being classified as “extreme” and I’m just wondering if rape has become something of an extreme trope or is it just something director’s or screenwriter’s rely upon when ideas have run out. Don’t get me wrong I’m not arguing against but it seems to me these days the more rape scenes you put in the more extreme you can sell a film as. Japanese filmmakers seem especially fond of this. It’s also always struck me as kind of odd that with the majority of extreme customers (and this is purely a guess on my part) being male wouldn’t it make sense to use male on male rape as a more shocking bit of horror that the usual female rape scene? Oh well just my rambling thoughts. Day after Thanksgiving so I have too much time on my hands.

For the Japanese it's a fantasy thing, you can see it in their porn.

As for actual underground stuff hmmm to be honest never really thought about it outside of rape/revenge where it's a catalyst of where the story will lead us.

I'm not a big fan of rape scenes although it can be more shocking and brutal than murder and torture scenes.  Depends on how believable it is, mostly it's done for exploitation.

It really seems like it's become a trope for extreme cinema and I've never really cared for it. It's gotten to the point where I'll be expecting it for an upcoming scene and when there isn't that's more of a surprise to me.

Male on male rape scenes would seem like the obvious choice for going "more extreme" and looking back at the responses people had towards Too Extreme For Mainstream's Torment, it seems like that's true. Kind of puts in perspective how some people think of rape as a whole, having different responses to the different assaults on both genders.

Rape scenes in general, but especially female rape scenes have been overdone in my opinion for a while. The shock value just isn't there anymore.

People think male on male rape is funny, it's often played for laughs.
