The Nightingale
« on: May 22, 2019, 09:29:03 PM »

Set in 1825, Clare, a young Irish convict woman, chases a British officer through the rugged Tasmanian wilderness, bent on revenge for a terrible act of violence he committed against her family. On the way she enlists the services of an Aboriginal tracker named Billy, who is also marked by trauma from his own violence-filled past.

I'm thrilled that there's another horror movie filmed in Tasmania.  I only know of two - Dying Breed and Van Diemen's Land.

Probably you're only chance to see it at the cinema since I doubt it will get a mainstream release.  Even in my country (for some reasons Australians hate Aussie films).

This was really good. Brutal as fuck. I can see how people walked out of the theater. It gets started pretty quick but then it's a slow burn. I guess it has some aussie history throughout, I for one didn't know much about what was told.

I'll always watch this directors films. I loved The Babadook. Kent is interesting. 7/10

Boring film, didn't like it much.  It's more about the aboriginal tracker than the Irish convict woman.  It's not a rape/revenge movie but it is in a way.  Too pretentious for my taste.  Great shots of the Tasmanian wilderness though, and the acting and production are top notch.  It has some violent scenes, but I wouldn't call it a horror movie, it's a drama.

(What happened to the aborigines was fucked up but it didn't need to be in this movie, false advertising)

My favorite aussie mini reviewer on Bloody~Disgusting. Now I need to see The Proposition.

The Nightingale - 5/5

The most brutal and provocative Australian film since The Proposition. A rape revenge story set in colonial times has a lot to say about the ugly birth of my country, it's treatment of its Indigenous owners and anyone else not a British settler. Some may see it as exploitative, but it's many themes are still affecting people here today. This movie is a complete gut punch.
