King Arthur
« on: April 20, 2020, 03:54:49 PM »
Anyone else a fan of the Arthurian legend?

Excalibur (1981)

A must see.  Classic.  Best King Arthur movie by far.

Sword of the Valiant (1984)

This is so awesome, and people say it sucks lol.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

One of the best comedies ever.

Knights of the Round Table (1953)

Only seen this once, but is pretty good for the time.

First Knight (1995)

This is very hollywood, but Sean Connery is a good Arthur and the production looks great.

King Arthur (2004)

This is a modern update of the legend, taking away the fantasy elements.  Still pretty good though.

King Arthur:  Legend of the Sword (2017)

This seemed like it was trying to be Lord of the Rings or something, with some really bad dialogue.

The Fisher King (1991)

This combines the tale of the Fisher King with a modern story of redemption.  One of my favourite Terry Gilliam movies.

I'm a fan. I got a copy of Excalibur and absolutely love it.  Just a dark dreary movie great acting and believable as well.
Another one I remember was the Mists of Avalon. I dont remember if it was good or not haven't seen it in well over a decade.

There's been a number of mini-series and tv shows based off King Arthur, like Mists of Avalon, Merlin, Camelot, etc.  I don't know if I'd recommend them, though.

I also forgot to mention The Fisher King (1991), which is based off an Arthurian legend.

Oh I like the Fisher King, it's been awhile for me but was good.
Agreed with you on Mists of Avalon.  It popped in my head and after my post i was like ah I dont think it was good.

I dont know if aired anywhere outside of the U.S.  but there was a Kimg Artuhur cartoon but the spin was they were Football players that were ancestors of the Knights Of the Round Table.

Disney is a major No. The Arthur Legend is so fucked up I love it!  Excalibur set the bar high. I'm going to hunt down the others on your list

I've been a fan of King Arthur since I was a kid.  All the knights of the round table are badass.  My favourite is Gawain.

I tend to think that Arthur is more than a legend based on Geoffrey of Monmouth's The History of the Kings of Britain.

This is the book I read when I was a kid:

First published 1953.

King Arthur apparently existed around the 5th century.  The History of the Kings of Britain was first published in 1138.  I don't think it's the first mention of Arthur but it apparently popularised Arthur.  It's a historical account.  Some people say 'pseudohistory' but I disagree.  Why would he list Arthur among real Kings if he wasn't real?

Fuck historians what the fuck do they know.  :anger:
