Leif Jonker's Darkness: The Vampire Version {1997}
« on: June 04, 2013, 04:27:45 AM »
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106669/

Director: Leif Jonker

A small community is besieged by vampires. After he watches friends ravaged in a convenience store, a lone avenger goes off to do battle with the undead, armed with shotgun, chainsaw, and Holy water. Later he finds other survivors and they try to stay alive long enough to do battle with Liven, king of the vampires.

This is definitely a gore hounds film by far with outstanding special effects that will simply blow you away, you get to see throats torn out, slashing & hacking from machetes, shit loads of splattered blood right down to vampires melting to death from sun light & gun fire. Darkness: The Vampire Version is an indie film with fuck all of a budget, and is truly a gem.

Quote
Besides the great filming techniques from Jonker, there is also a ton of blood and gore in the film. Almost everyone working on the film was between the ages of 15 and 20, so when it comes to the special effects, you really have to give these guys an applause. The F/X work in Darkness is really great, and it actually rivals some of the F/X work done for The Evil Dead and Dead Alive. The ending meltdown sequence just has to be seen to be believed!

The musical score is another thing that makes this movie so great. It has this really haunting yet sad feel to it. It works flawlessly with the film.

I totally forgot about this film until I saw someone watched in on Bloody~Disgusting. Shame on me, for this needs to grace the walls of EHC.

Great movie! I have the Film Threat VHS and the Barrel Entertainment 2-disc DVD. It's actually from 1993, but for some reason IMDB has it listed as a 1997 movie.

Another I finally caught up on tonight.

Enjoyed this one quite a bit. You got the feeling of this small group of people just trying to survive. Along with this the gore was real cool, which is always great naturally. Especially at the end. Vampire wise in some ways they were your normal blood suckers who have a bad reaction to holy water and sunlight but they could be killed by anything penetrating the heart, be it bullets, machetes or what have you. have to say I really liked this idea and made for something different and bloody!

Reading about the age bracket of 15 to 20 with the people involved I am really impressed!

One of my Facebook friends had shared a pic of his VHS copy of Darkness and I commented about loving to have the DVD of this but unfortunately is expensive at the moment. I brought the whole thing to Leif Jonker's attention and he shared the above video link on Youtube and felt people here would be interested. He also made the below statement as well…

There's a lot of skepticism among distributors that S8mm is going to yield much from an HD transfer, but J.R. Bookwalter is doing a BluRay of DEAD NEXT DOOR so that may finally put those fears to rest. Still, it would be expensive so we may just do a limited run of 1300 copies of the "Metal Cut" on DVD for the folks who really want it.

This is a really good movie. I finally watched it after a friend kept recommending it to me. This is a great not so well known vampire movie. It would probably make my top 5 vampire films. 9/10 Amazing!

I think I mentioned this in the above but I asked Lief about a new re-release of this and he stated there is a real possibility it will happen. I look for it from time to time but unfortunately it is either either fairly expensive or this idiot is still trying to sell his copy with the one disc missing and no cover art  :horror: Bet the disc missing is the actual movie  :cant look:

Another I am overdue to re-experience again!

It would be nice to have a new release of Darkness maybe Cult Epics could do it. I found the Barrel release on Ebay fairly cheap. I paid $23.  I think people who try to sell movies on Amazon for thousands of dollars have to be crazy. No one is going to pay that much for one movie.

$23 is an awesome price, nice find! Feeding off people's passion for film by charging ridicules amounts is a pure cunt act!

I own the 2 disc version. Really fun splatter film. The price has came down quite a bit, if anyone is interested you can buy used copies on amazon for around $20-25 dollars.
