Slender Man (2018)
« on: January 13, 2019, 07:43:25 PM »
This has gotten mostly trashed, but I think it needs another look.

The film is full of occultic imagery (a lot of horror films are if you pay attention).  Occultic imagery everywhere in this world - it's like a hidden language

Is clearly referencing the masonic tracing board:

(You see the way the 3 lights are positioned and the chessboard floor)

Maybe I'm wrong, but there are many other images like that throughout the film.

I usually don't like films like this, mainstream usual fare horror but I will check it out cuz I like you.  : )

Let's see where this takes me..and I'll come back and be nothing but honest.  :gum:

 :)

I don't either, but some are done well.  Particularly when you can see the multiple narratives going on - one for the braindead (for the most part) public, and the hidden narratives that few recognise.

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is notorious for this, but many mainstream films have it, especially fantasy/horror films.

Everybody should have some basic knowledge of the occult anyway.  Not doing the rituals because that is potentially dangerous, but knowing what the signs and symbols mean.

The ending is not exactly 'happy'.  Most of the time, the hero triumphs, but this one has a downer ending.  Some people don't like that.

my issue with the ending had nothing to do with the "downer" aspect of it but rather how they just seemed to pull it out of their asses at the last minute ... that and the dodgy CGI

Ok then, thanks for explaining your reasons for disliking the ending.

This wasn't a bad film all in all. I thought the ending was fitting. CGI was what I suspected and the kids were not as annoying as I thought they'd be. I know nothing of Slender Man so it was interesting getting to know the backstory and the way they explained it as a virus that gets into your brain.

I will never watch it again nor recommend it but glad I did see it.

Count, you and I go back along way on Horror Message Boards and your opinion is valued. I'll always check out your RECs.  :red_heart:

Some of the symbolic shots looked good and the CGI was lazy and unimaginative. With a bit more effort could of been spooky. Some of the visuals in the credits were good.

But fuck those girls were dumb...as fuck! DON"T LOOK...Ok I'll look  :straight: But they wouldn't have a movie then I guess...

Didn't mind the CGI, it made for some weird trippy scenes.  Dumb characters don't bother me because that's realistic as many people are like that IRL lol

I think people are too used to seeing the hero/survivor overcome all odds and save the day, for a neat happy ending.  Movies like Halloween, Friday the 13th, etc, always show the final girl defeating the villain.  So I don't mind when occasionally, that doesn't happen.  It might just be a setup for sequels, though.

IRL unfortunately the villain often wins too.  Movies are a reflection of real life.  You get more truth from cinema than you do from watching the nightly news.

Exactly!

Love it when the villain comes on top...true horror...like a nightmare in ways.

As for the propaganda...mind numbing...I mean news...

Know people who don't watch horror as there is enough in this world...I watch it because it got me through fucked up experiences...it was my comfort through youth till now. I've seen horror...
