The Carrier {1988}
« on: June 08, 2014, 06:35:29 PM »
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094837/

Director; Nathan J. White

Quote
You, you and you-guard the cats.

Quote
A small town is suddenly stricken by a strange phenomenon. Random inanimate object suddenly start dissolving any living thing that comes in contact with it. So, they do what any rational, sane person would do in such a circumstance. They wrap their entire bodies in plastic and begin hoarding cats. You see, they use the cats to test things before they touch them.

It all ties back to a young outcast who lives out in the woods. Nobody in the town will have anything to do with him after he accidently burned his parents alive. It turns out he is the carrier. Anything he touches becomes infected with the uh...whatever it is. See, he had a run in with a bigfoot type creature and killed it but not before it clawed him and passed whatever the bad stuff is on to him.

Meanwhile the townspeople have divided up into two camps. The white plastic wearing church people and the black plastic wearing bar people. Things eventually end up in all out war when one group attacks the other's fortified complex in hopes of ransacking their cat stockpiles. This leads to great lines like "CATS...OR DEATH!"

The Carrier just might be the strangest 80s horror film I've ever seen. I want to believe the film makers were in on the joke, but the whole thing is so earnest, that I have to deduce that it was written and directed by an inmate from an insane asylum. There are so many great WTF moments in this film, and once I saw the townsfolk going to war over cats (don't ask), I knew I was in love with this thing. This is what I look for in a cult film. I absolutely loved this bit of absurd nonsense, and highly recommend any lovers of weirdo cult cinema to seek it out.

A quote from a guy on Face Book. Think about this film a lot and when I saw this needed to add.

I need to re-watch this one at some point. It's a great flick! I have the VHS.

It did get a DVD release from Code Red. Don't know if it's out of print. I'll have to check Amazon to see what the prices are.
