Les raisins de la mort (The Grapes of Death) (1978)

Les raisins de la mort (The Grapes of Death) is a 1978 French horror film directed by Jean Rollin. It centres on a young woman who becomes trapped in a village where a dangerous pesticide has turned the residents into zombies.

Made after the majority of Rollin's famed surrealistic and erotic vampire tales, Grapes of Death is a slight change of pace from the aforementioned vampire classics, but does not lose the surrealistic under-tones and dreaminess, despite upping the blood and action.

Labeled as 'France's first gore film' The Grapes of Death is not only a classic of the zombie genre, but also of the horror genre, mixing gore, the macabre, but still imbibing Rollin's trademark flair.

Along with The Iron Rose, The Grapes of Death is one of my favourite Rollin films, and one I like to revisit often.

This is an interesting and yet wierd film. I too have it in my collection. Parts of it later on in it are really wierd with the witch or whatever she really was.

Oh you speaking about the blond in the nightgown, she was infected but showed no outward signs. When she speaks with our heroine of the story she mentions she never drinks but had imbibed in a little wine. Then later she mentions she was infected to the two guys and states she didn't get the outward rot or whatever.

Would you consider this a zombie film Blood…anyone?

On viewing this though there is the rot of the body then later when the fiancé speaks out of the brain I was unsure if this could truly be considered a zombie film. For me the rot was causing people to go insane thus do what they were doing with the chaos and murder.

But whatever The Grapes of Death IS brilliant and a film I was seriously glad to finally pick up when I did.

Big Jean Rollin fan and this is one of my favorites, alongside of Living Dead Girl and Night of the Hunted.
