I Walked with a Zombie (1943)
« on: June 09, 2013, 03:18:45 AM »

Betsy, a young Canadian nurse travels to the West Indies to care for Jessica, the wife of Paul, a plantation manager. Jessica seems to be suffering from a kind of mental paralysis as a result of fever. When she falls in love with Paul, Betsy determines to cure Jessica even if she needs to use a voodoo ceremony.

Voodoo and ritualistic magic have always fascinated me, which is one of the reasons why Jacques Tourneur's I Walked with a Zombie is my favourite zombie film of all time. Not only is it genuinely creepy, but the voodoo angle is dealt with extremely competently. If only they'd make more zombie films of this ilk...

As mentioned, it's not a 'typical' zombie film by the usual gut munching, hordes of shambling dead taking over the world standards.

Its approach is subtle, creepy, and built around mythology and magic. Equal parts drama as well as horror. Hopefully you'll enjoy it if you do check it out though, Splat.
